If you have answers to these questions please share

Who can we voice our concerns to with regards to changing the requirements to allow people who have had WLS to join the military? If there is a petition going around out there where is it? I would like to sign it.  Is there some research study on the effects of WLS on military performance?  If there is I'm willing to be a test subject so we can prove to them that we can do the same things that non WLS candidates can do.  If no research has been done who can I talk to about initiating one?

I'm not a professional on military requirements, so if there is anyone out there who knows anyone who was accepted after WLS please share.

  1. There has been research done on this topic. The problem is that they classify each surgery the same. And that is an issue because each surgery has its own stipulations. For example gastric bypass will never be waiverable for the military. Your anatomy had to be rearranged and you are likely to develop ulcers not to mention dumping syndrome. Lap-Band is also a permanent no-go because you have a foreign object inside you that could rupture or cause other complications. Now once it is removed there is a slight chance you can get a waiver. And now we get to the sleeve which is the procedure I had done. This is waiverable. And I am currently waiting and praying for the surgeon general to approve my request. The reason the sleeve is the only one the Army will consider is because it has no restrictions. The fact that your stomach is removed does not concern them so much. They are more concerned with dietary restrictions. The sleeve has none. I can eat what i want or need. The only thing is i have to eat small portions but any healthy person my size should eat small amounts anyways. I am fully active and physically fit and do not need medications aside from vitamins that everyone should take anyways. So if you are considering the Army and have had the sleeve done take your chances. Its 2017 and The Army is more aware of the surgery now than it was 6 years ago.

    1. Thanks for this information. Please let us know the outcome of your waiver request with the surgeon general. I'm turning 38 this year so I don't think I meet the age requirement to join anymore.
